Common questions

Electrical Questions We Get Asked

Why does my fuse box keep tripping?
Usually something on that circuit is unsafe, overloaded, damaged or affected by moisture. Don't keep forcing it back on. That's the fuse box doing its job. We can test the circuit and appliances to find the actual cause.
How much does an EV charger installation cost in Fife?
It depends on the charger you choose and how far it sits from your fuse board. We survey the property and provide a clear quotation before any work starts. Call us or use the quote form and we'll price it up.
How do I know if my house needs rewiring?
Warning signs include frequent tripping, flickering lights, warm sockets or switches, an old fuse box with rewirable fuses, or fabric-covered cables. An EICR can help determine whether a full rewire, a partial one, further investigation or targeted repairs may be appropriate.
Do landlords in Scotland need an EICR?
Private landlords in Scotland must ensure that a current electrical safety inspection is in place for the property and repeated at intervals of no more than five years. The wider inspection includes an EICR for the fixed electrical installation and inspection and testing of electrical equipment supplied by the landlord. A current inspection does not need to be repeated for every new tenancy, but the latest report must be provided to an incoming tenant. See our EICR testing in Fife page for more.
Does my house require smoke alarms?
Yes. Every home in Scotland must have interlinked smoke and heat alarms: a smoke alarm in the main living room, one in every hallway or landing, and a heat alarm in the kitchen. A carbon monoxide detector is also required in any room with a carbon-fuelled appliance or flue, except a gas cooker or hob.
Is a burning smell from a socket dangerous?
Yes, treat it as urgent. It can mean overheating, loose connections or an overloaded circuit. Switch off the affected circuit at the fuse box if it's safe to do so and give us a call straight away.
Are you qualified and insured?
Yes. We're NAPIT registered, City & Guilds 2391 qualified for inspection and testing, and fully insured. Every notifiable job comes with the proper certification for your records.
